UAE Visa Grace Period After Cancellation: 30, 60, or 180 Days? (2026)

When your UAE visa is cancelled — whether through resignation, employer termination, or any other reason — you enter a grace period. Understanding exactly how many days you have is critical, because overstaying carries a fine of AED 50 per day.

Grace Periods by Visa Type

The UAE government sets different grace periods depending on your visa type. Here's the current breakdown as of 2026:

Visa TypeGrace PeriodNotes
Employment Visa30 daysStandard for most employment visas after cancellation
Dependent Visa30 daysLinked to sponsor's visa cancellation
Investor / Partner Visa30 daysAfter trade license cancellation
Freelance Visa30 daysAfter permit cancellation
Green Visa180 daysExtended grace period for self-sponsored residents
Golden Visa180 daysExtended grace period for long-term visa holders

When Does the Grace Period Start?

Your grace period begins on the date your visa is officially cancelled in the GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) system — not the date you resign, not the date your employer sends the cancellation request, and not your last working day.

For employment visas, the typical process is: you submit your resignation, serve your notice period, your employer initiates the visa cancellation through MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation), and then GDRFA processes the cancellation. The grace period clock starts ticking from the GDRFA cancellation date, which appears on your visa cancellation stamp or digital record.

It's important to confirm the exact cancellation date with your employer or sponsor. Delays in processing are common — if your employer takes a week to submit the cancellation after your last day, that's a week of your grace period effectively extended. Always verify through the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) smart services app.

The MOHRE to GDRFA Process

For employment visa cancellations, the process flows through two government entities:

  1. MOHRE cancellation — Your employer submits a work permit cancellation through the MOHRE system. This requires your final settlement to be agreed upon and any labour disputes to be resolved. Processing takes 2–5 business days.
  2. GDRFA visa cancellation — After MOHRE approval, the visa cancellation is processed through GDRFA. This can be done at a GDRFA office or through approved typing centers. You'll receive a cancellation stamp in your passport (or digital cancellation for e-visa holders). Processing is typically same-day to 2 business days.
  3. Emirates ID cancellation — Your Emirates ID is automatically cancelled when your visa is cancelled. You should receive confirmation through the ICP app. Keep your Emirates ID card until you leave the country, as it may be needed for final transactions.

The AED 50/Day Overstay Fine

If you remain in the UAE beyond your grace period without a valid visa, you will be charged an overstay fine of AED 50 per day. This adds up quickly:

  • 1 week overstay: AED 350
  • 2 weeks overstay: AED 700
  • 1 month overstay: AED 1,500
  • 3 months overstay: AED 4,500

In addition to the daily fine, there is typically a one-time administrative fee of AED 100 and a AED 200 exit pass fee. Overstay fines must be settled at the airport before departure or at a GDRFA office. Extended overstays can complicate future visa applications for the UAE and potentially other GCC countries.

Golden Visa and Green Visa Holders: 180 Days

If you hold a Golden Visa (10-year) or Green Visa (5-year), you benefit from an extended grace period of 180 days (approximately 6 months) after cancellation. This is a significant advantage — it gives you ample time to settle all affairs, sell property, and plan your departure without rush.

However, don't confuse the grace period with the visa validity. If your Golden Visa is still active (not cancelled), there is no grace period to worry about. The 180-day window only applies once the visa has been formally cancelled through GDRFA. Some Golden Visa holders choose to keep their visa active even after relocating, as it allows re-entry to the UAE for up to 6 months at a time.

What to Do During Your Grace Period

Your grace period is your window to complete all departure tasks. Prioritize these in order:

  1. Collect your end-of-service gratuity and final settlement from your employer
  2. Give notice on your lease (60–90 days ideally, but start the process even if you can't give full notice)
  3. Cancel or transfer your car registration (settle all fines first via the RTA app)
  4. Begin pet export paperwork if applicable (the rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days before travel)
  5. Close bank accounts and credit cards (clear all liabilities first)
  6. Cancel telecom contracts (Etisalat/du) and settle device installments
  7. Request DEWA/ADDC final bill and security deposit refund
  8. Obtain a police clearance certificate if needed for your destination country

The key is to start immediately. Many of these tasks have their own processing timelines, and you don't want to be waiting on paperwork as your grace period runs out.
